External scholarships

PhD students can be admitted with external scholarships to finance their studies. The external scholarship should be of the same amount as a doctoral salary after taxes. If the external scholarship does not reach this level, an additional scholarship must be acquired.

According to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance, PhD students with an external scholarship must be employed when three years of the programme remain. There are exceptions to this rule, which are also regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance.

There are rules of procedure for reviewing foreign scholarships, describing how an individual assessment is made as to whether the scholarship meets the requirements or not.

The Research Studies Board at the Faculty of Medicine does not, for example, allow scholarship providers to demand reimbursements or penalties if the PhD student does not achieve the degree objectives. In connection with admission, this must be certified by the scholarship provider. The form is available here:
